November, 2018:  Zimbabwe

The S.E.L.F. Project returned to the Bubi District in Zimbabwe over Thanksgiving Break. As promised, a multi-sports basketball court was built at Majiji High School and S.E.L.F. returned for the opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for this historical and monumental court. The cost of building the court rose to just under $14,000 and with logistical assistance from The Collin Nyabadza Children's Voice Charitable Trust, the court was completed in time for our return visit in November. In addition to the official opening of the multi-sports basketball court, S.E.L.F. held yoga and basketball sessions and donated sports equipment of basketballs, cones, ball pumps, bags, tennis rackets, nets, and uniforms to Majiji High School and community. A return visit to Mbembeswana Primary School to show our appreciation for allowing us to use their basketball court in 2017 included sessions in yoga and basketball and an equipment donation of basketballs. It was an action packed week filled with excitement and enthusiasm that also included evenings filled with cultural singing and dancing. We are encouraged by the reception of the court by the school and the community and anticipate great things to come as a result of this multi-sports basketball court. It was a successful trip. Photos of court and the different stages of the court being built can be found below.

Testimonials for The S.E.L.F. Project. Coaches verbal appreciation of sports equipment donations and the positive impact of our work.

Summer, 2017:  Zimbabwe

This summer The S.E.L.F. Project traveled to Bubi and Umganza, Zimbabwe to work in conjunction with the The Collin Nyabadza Children's Voice Charitable Trust. S.E.L.F. held workshops with teachers and coaches, presenting information on the value of lesson planning, practice planning, coaching techniques and strategies. Vital discussions were held regarding the important role coaches play in a young persons life and how sports, training, and competition can lead to increased self-esteem, self-confidence, resiliency and leadership skills in participants. The teachers and coaches (and students) practiced and experienced the various warm-up techniques, i.e. yoga, body weight exercises, dynamic stretching, etc. and different sports skills.  A notebook with all the information presented was left with each school including diagrams for volleyball, soccer, and basketball. Sports jerseys, volleyball nets, indestructible soccer balls, basketballs, volleyballs, ball bags, and ball pumps were among the items donated.  Majiji High School teachers and staff displayed considerable interest in all the information shared including Restorative Justice practices, classroom management techniques and student expectations. They also expressed notable interest and enthusiasm in developing its basketball program. The S.E.L.F. Project knows and values the lessons and skills that can be taught through the wonderful sport of basketball. Plans have been made to be build a basketball court at Majiji High School. Please see the video below. The cost to build the basketball court is $13,000 USD.  Fundraising has begun for this project.
